Allergic Reactions

Types of Allergic Skin Reactions

There are many different types of allergic skin reactions, each needing a different type of treatment to control it properly. Since many men and women feel like their lives and confidence have been affected by skin allergies, it’s key to seek care from a qualified dermatologist to get the best possible results.

The most common type of allergic skin reactions include:

  • Allergic Contact Dermatitis: when something touches the skin and causes a reaction. For example, some people are allergic to the metal nickel and will have a skin reaction if jewelry made with nickel touches their skin.
  • Urticaria or Hives: raised bumps on the skin that form because of an allergic reaction. These bumps are also called welts or wheals. A person may get hives after eating food or medications that they are allergic to.
  • Angioedema: swelling deep in the skin. Most frequently developing on places like the eyelids, lips, and throat, angioedema often develops at the same time as hives.
  • Anaphylaxis: an acute allergic reaction that can become fatal within minutes. This condition is a medical emergency, with 80-90% of cases involving the sudden onset of itching, hives, swelling of the mouth, lips, and tongue. These symptoms may also be accompanied by the sudden onset of rapid respiratory compromise or a sudden drop in blood pressure. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention.

How are Skin Allergies Diagnosed?

At Vibrant dermatology, we can help you identify the cause of an allergic reaction and offer you a comprehensive treatment plan. Skin allergies can be disruptive to your life and uncomfortable, not to mention that certain allergies can cause dangerous reactions, so it is key to seek treatment from a qualified dermatologist.

Allergy testing often involves blood tests and a patch test, which checks for allergic contact dermatitis. During this procedure, Dr. Ip puts a small amount of allergen on your skin, covers it with a bandage, and lets it sit for 2 to 4 days. The doctor then checks for signs of a reaction — usually a rash right under the bandage.

Treatment Options for Skin Allergies

Based on the findings from your allergy tests, Dr. Ip will develop a treatment plan for you that may include topical or oral medications as well as lifestyle changes that can minimize allergic reactions. For those with skin allergies, reducing contact with an allergen, taking the right medications, and learning correct safety measures can all help reduce flareups.
