If you have ever researched Botox, you probably came across the phrase “units.” And then comes the obvious question: How many Botox units do I actually need to achieve the results I want?
The answer isn’t that simple.
Someone in their 20s may need a small amount in one area, while someone in their 40s or 50s may need more. But age is only one piece of the puzzle.
Does Age Determine How Many Botox Units I Need?
Though your age does affect how many units you need to achieve optimal results, it’s not the only factor.
Did you know that some people start seeing expression lines in their 20s? This is especially true for those with strong facial movements.
At this age, treatments like baby Botox are quite common. It involves using a small amount of product to soften a particular area before lines become noticeable at rest.
In your 30s, you may be treating lines that are becoming more visible but aren’t overly deep. In your 40s and beyond, treatment focuses on softening lines that have become more set-in.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you automatically need more units because you’re older. A good treatment plan is based on your face, not your birthday.
How Many Units Are Typically Needed for Frown Lines?
The “11s” between the eyebrows are one of the most common Botox treatment areas. Generally treating the glabellar lines requires around 20 units that are divided among five injection sites.
Your provider will adjust your plan based on your muscle strength in wrinkle depth.
What About Forehead Lines?
Forehead lines can be a little more complicated.
The frontalis muscle helps raise your eyebrows, so placing too much product or injecting in the wrong location can affect brow movement. That is one reason why choosing an experienced injector is so important.
Treating forehead lines usually requires around 40 units.
How Many Units Are Needed for Crow’s Feet?
Crow’s feet are the little lines that appear at the outer corners of the eyes when you smile or squint. The recommended number of units is 24 or 12 units for each side.
Again, this number is a reference point, not a guarantee for every patient.
What If You Want Multiple Areas Treated?
The more areas that are being treated, the more Botox units will be needed.
For example, treating three upper-face areas, including forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet, requires more than 60 units.
During your consultation, you’ll discuss your problem areas and highlight which wrinkles you want to treat. After an in-depth conversation, your injector can give you an idea of how many units you’ll need to achieve your desired results.
Why Is a Personalized Botox Plan Is So Important
Two people can have similar wrinkles and need completely different amounts of product.
This is because Botox works on muscles. Stronger muscles may require a different approach than weaker ones. Your provider will also consider your facial anatomy and how you naturally move your face before deciding how many units you need.
At Vibrant Dermatology, we tailor treatment based on your unique facial anatomy and goals.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Like any injectable treatment, Botox results are temporary. You can expect your results to last three to four months.
This means you’ll need to schedule touch-up injections to keep wrinkles from returning. In between sessions, you may be able to increase the longevity of your results by:
- Not rubbing or applying pressure to the treated area for at least six hours
- Remaining upright for at least four hours after treatment
- Limiting heat and strenuous activities for 24-48 hours
- Staying hydrated
- Protecting your skin against harmful UV rays
- Managing stress and prioritizing sleep
Taking a zinc supplement may also be beneficial.
