Which Hair Loss Treatments Actually Have Real Evidence Behind Them?

one of many hair loss treatments that actually work

If you’ve done research into hair loss treatments, you were probably immediately overwhelmed. One product promises thicker hair in weeks while another claims to wake up dormant hair follicles.

From serums to injections to professional treatments, it can be hard to know what options are actually worth trying.

So which hair loss treatments actually have real evidence behind them? Read on to learn more.

Figuring Out the Cause Is the First Step

Before jumping into treatment, it’s important to first figure out what’s causing your hair to thin or fall out.

Hair loss can be caused by many different factors, ranging from hormones to chronic stress to genetics. It can also be connected to thyroid issues, nutritional deficiencies, and even certain medications.

Different types of hair loss require different approaches.

At Vibrant Dermatology, we use blood tests and sometimes a scalp biopsy to identify what’s causing your thinning hair so we can best treat it.

Which Hair Loss Treatments Actually Have Real Evidence Behind Them?

Thanks to modern science, there are more effective hair loss treatments than ever before. So which hair loss treatments are actually proven?

Here are some top options to consider.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is one of the many hair restoration treatments we offer. It involves using a small amount of blood that’s processed to create a serum that’s rich in platelet-rich growth factors.

PRP is then injected into many areas of the scalp where the hair is thinning. The growth factors in the platelets support hair regrowth and reduce hair loss by supporting healthy, active hair follicles.

Our clinic recommends an initial series of three treatments. You may need maintenance treatment six months after to provide a second boost of hair nourishing compounds.

Dutasteride

Dutasteride mesotherapy is a procedure used to treat androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss) by injecting micro-doses of dutasteride directly into the scalp’s middle layer (dermis).

Because dutasteride is a powerful 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that blocks the conversion of testosterone into hair-thinning dihydrotestosterone (DHT), delivering it locally aims to suppress scalp DHT directly at the follicle level.

Prescription and Topical Medications

Medication is a key part of evidence-based hair loss care.

At Vibrant Dermatology, we offer both oral and topical medications. Topical treatments like minoxidil are applied directly to the scalp, which may help support the hair-growth cycle.

Oral medications can target hormonal or biological factors contributing to hair loss.

The catch with these treatments is that they require consistency and patience. Your hair won’t magically regrow overnight and skipping treatment will affect your results.

It can take months of continued treatment before you start seeing noticeable results

Laser Treatments

Laser light therapy is another non-surgical option we offer. This treatment uses low-level laser energy to stimulate the scalp and encourage hair follicle activity.

Sessions are quick and require little to no downtime. But like other options, consistency is a must and results depend on the underlying cause of your hair loss.

Corticosteroids

Hair thinning and hair loss caused by inflammatory or autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata can be addressed with corticosteroid injections. Reducing inflammation around the affected follicles creates a more ideal environment for growth and less breakage.

Supplements

Hair supplements are everywhere, but they aren’t always the magic fix. These products may be beneficial if you have a nutritional deficiency that’s contributing to hair loss.

Iron, zinc, and vitamin D deficiencies have all been linked to excessive hair shedding. Taking a supplement as a complement to another hair loss treatment is best.

Which Hair Loss Treatment Is Right for Me?

There’s no universal hair loss treatment that works for everyone. The first step is figuring out why you’re losing hair.

Once we have those answers, our team will develop a custom treatment plan to reduce shedding and encourage regrowth.

Stop wasting time and money on fad products that simply don’t work. Instead, come to Vibrant Dermatology to get to the root cause of your hair issues!
