Ask Dr. Ip – Is Sunscreen Dangerous to My Health?

Summer is in full swing, which means a lot of traveling, BBQ’s and fun in the sun! This month, I’d like to update you on some important new guidelines regarding sunscreen use, particularly in children and women who are pregnant and nursing.

A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association raised concerns about the absorption of chemical sunscreens, particularly in pediatrics populations. The concern is that some of the chemicals in sunscreen may not be safe if they are absorbed into the blood stream.

Skin cancer is not a laughing matter, particularly melanoma which can be fatal. For years, I have recommended physical blockers for sun protection (instead of chemical sunscreen). These are inert metals such as zinc and titanium that remain on the surface of the skin, physically blocking harmful effects of the sun. At SkinBarMD and Vibrant Dermatology, 90% of our sunscreen products are physical blockers while 10% contain chemical blockers. However, these chemicals are sourced from organic ingredients to help keep you as safe as possible. lip augmentation product

Remember, sunscreen should be applied every two hours, or every 80 minutes if you are swimming or heavily sweating.
